Overview

The 53rd Annual USC Internal Medicine for PCPs & Rheumatologists course is designed especially for internists, family physicians, generalist physicians, rheumatologists, and allied health professionals who care for adults. This four-day course provides participants with a series of interactive lectures by USC and guest faculty experts spanning a wide array of contemporary and important topics for primary care practitioners and rheumatologists, and panel discussions in which participants engage our faculty experts with questions arising from the presentations. Participants will be able to attain new and practical knowledge for integration into their clinical practices to improve patient care and patient outcomes.


Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:


  1. • Apply up-to-date evidence to diagnose and manage the cardiometabolic and cognitive consequences of menopause; prescribe obesity medications and provide practical counseling to people with obesity; address sleep quality in people with sleep disorders; discuss complementary therapies and whether they impact health and longevity; manage constipation.
  2. • Apply current evidence and guidelines to determine in whom to perform a TAVR; choose between a clip vs. surgery for mitral valve repair; discuss the risks and benefits of appendage occlusion vs. chronic anticoagulation in people with atrial fibrillation; support the value of coronary artery stenting.
  3. • Discuss up-to-date evidence to manage people with drug allergies; manage urticaria; identify and care for people with food allergies; recognize and manage angioedema; identify and manage common dermatologic conditions; treat osteoporosis; manage withdrawal of systemic steroids in rheumatologic illness; screen for and manage thyroid dysfunction; and examine the impact of inflammation in diabetes.
  4. • Apply diagnostic and treatment strategies to manage interstitial lung disease; asthma and COPD; the breathless patient; bronchiectasis; IgG4 pancreatitis; inflammatory bowel disease; metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD); and pain in rheumatologic illness with exercise.
  5. • Apply the latest evidence to discuss and manage the overlap of neurology and rheumatology; examine the unique considerations of rheumatology care in the intensive care unit; diagnose and manage mixed connective tissue disorders, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, crystal arthropathies, and the psychological impact of rheumatologic illness.
  6. • Interpret diagnostic tests and determine treatment approaches for rheumatologic problems in primary care and specialty practices such as ANA testing, SLE, vasculitis, and Sjogren’s.

The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
