Overview
The 27th Annual Max R. Gaspar, MD, Symposium will take place Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, starting at 8:00 am. Every year the Gaspar Symposium explores a different topic, one chosen to be of interest to medical professionals at every level.

This year, the topic is "Vascular Surgery on the Cutting Edge: Innovation in Thought, Delivery, and Research." Fred Weaver, MD, MMM, chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery, will kick off the conference with a course overview and a tribute to Dr. Gaspar, who served as an attending surgeon at Los Angeles County Hospital for more than 50 years, and as a Senior Vascular Attending Surgeon for more than 25 years.

Kenneth R. Ziegler, MD and Gregory A Magee, MD, will moderate three sessions exploring current efforts to push beyond the known limits of our knowledge and techniques in cerebrovascular, venous, peripheral arterial, and aortic disease, and a fourth session setting the groundwork on how to approach the future of vascular surgery through improvisation, adaptation, and ultimately overcoming our issues. The first half of the day will conclude with a lecture from Gaspar Visiting Professor Alik Farber, MD, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Boston Medical Center.

Contributing speakers include the faculty of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and guest speakers from across the country.

The program is presented by Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy in concert with the USC Office of Continuing Medical Education, and participants are eligible for CME credit.

Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the risks, benefits, and alternatives of new technologies in vascular surgery in comparison to existing clinical solutions and pathways.
  2. Identify opportunities to provide vascular surgical solutions for patients previously deemed "not surgical candidates"
  3. Meaningfully and thoughtfully integrate cutting edge endovascular techniques into current clinical practice algorithms based on clinical outcomes rather than novelty.
  4. Assess readiness of the learner's personal practice to adapt to changes in practice expectations with respect to these disruptive technologies
