The Paul Coverdell National Acute Stroke Program (Coverdell Program) is a CDC program to support the collection, measurement, and analysis of data to improve the quality of stroke patients. It is funded through a grant from the CDC.

This grant is intended to coordinate and expand existing efforts in Kentucky to improve stroke-related health outcomes by working with Kentucky health care systems and community providers to implement comprehensive stroke systems for persons at high risk for stroke and those who have had a stroke.

Part of the Coverdell Program initiative includes creating the Kentucky Stroke Improvement Cooperative (KSIC). This cooperative will be the leadership team guiding the Coverdell Program strategies for improving the quality of stroke care in the Commonwealth.

Program Details:
The Coverdell Program is a 3-year program designed to strengthen relationships between healthcare organizations, community partners and patients to identify those patients at risk for stroke, before a stroke event occurs, and improve outcomes for stroke patients following discharge.

This program will utilize multiple strategies to meet these goals including:

  • Expanding access and participation in the Stroke Encounter Quality Improvement Project (SEQIP)
  • increasing access and utilization of Get with the Guidelines-Stroke (GWTG-S)
  • improving compliance and understanding of evidence-based performance measures and
  • Reducing stroke disparities and deaths over the long term

The training modules were produced by the Wellness Equity Alliance as an online CME-accredited training series titled Implicit Bias in Medicine (series). Wellness Equity Alliance (WEA) is a national alliance of population and public health leaders committed to transforming public health care interventions by tailoring them to historically marginalized communities. WEA provides technical assistance related to public and population health, hospitals, health centers, government agencies, and community-based organizations.
