Brief Bio for Galinos Barmparas, MD, FACS

 

Dr. Galinos Barmparas received his medical degree from the National and Kapodistrian School of Medicine at the University of Athens. After a research fellowship at the Division of Trauma at the LA County + USC Medical Center, and after completing his General Surgery internship there, he joined the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he completed his General Surgery training and his Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. Dr. Barmparas went on to pursue additional training in Trauma Surgery at the Groote Schuur Hospital, University of Cape Town, one of the busiest trauma centers in the world.

Dr. Barmparas was recruited by the Department of Surgery in 2016. He was quickly awarded the Kenneth Adashek Award for Excellence in Patient Care. He has served various administrative and leadership roles in the Division of Trauma, Acute Care Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. He currently serves as the Trauma Medical Director. His leadership abilities and potential were recognized by the American College of Surgeons when he was selected for the Future Trauma Leaders Program. He has also served as the Young Surgeons representative for the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. He currently serves on numerous local, regional, and national committees, including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Multi-Institutional Trials Committee and is a Vice Chair for the Southern California Chapter of the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Barmparas is the recipient of many research awards, including the prestigious American Association for the Surgery for Trauma Research and Education Fund Scholarship in Trauma and Critical Care. He is the author and co-author of almost 200 peer reviewed publications and has presented over 130 abstracts at regional and national meetings. His research interests span the spectrum of trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care but is mostly focused on trauma resuscitation and quality improvement.

Dr. Barmparas is a passionate educator and a committed mentor. He has received a number of teaching awards as a resident and as a staff surgeon, including the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Medical Education Award by Graduate Medical Education.
