Daniel R. Margulies, MD, FACS is the Chief, Section of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Intensive Care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He is Professor of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and also Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California at Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine.  He is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care.

Dr. Margulies earned his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in mechanical engineering and earned his medical degree from the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, the in the state he grew up in. He completed his general surgery internship and residency at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, followed by a Clinical Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Dr. Margulies has been a staff physician and member of the faculty at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center, for over thirty years.  In his current role as Director of Acute Care Surgery he oversees trauma, emergency surgery and surgical critical care. Dr. Margulies is dedicated to professional organizations both regionally and nationally. He is an active reviewer for the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma (COT) Verification Review Committee (VRC) and has served as Chairman VRC. He is past Western Surgical Association, the Southwestern Surgical Congress, and of the Southern California Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, past Chairman of the Southern California Committee on Trauma and past Commissioner for the State of California Emergency Medical Services Commission after serving as a Los Angeles County commissioner to the Emergency Medical Services.

He is active in many societies and serves on the editorial board for The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. 

In addition to his clinical and teaching interests as faculty of the general surgery residency program, and as past director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Margulies has a wide interest in surgical research in trauma and surgical critical care. He is widely published in peer-reviewed journals.
